UPC Representative and European Patent Attorney

Sven Bogaerts (ir.,PhD) is a European Patent Attorney and a registered UPC Representative at De Clercq & Partners with extensive experience in patent prosecution, opposition and appeal proceedings and strategic IP advisory work across biotechnology, life sciences and engineering-related technologies. He advises innovative companies on the protection and development of patent portfolios. 

Sven holds a Master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering and a PhD in Biotechnology from Ghent University. His doctoral research focused on molecular biomedical research within the VIB, and he subsequently gained several years of postdoctoral research experience. This academic background provides him with a strong foundation in applied life sciences and translational research. He joined De Clercq & Partners in 2008 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2013. Sven’s technical expertise spans a broad range of technologies, including biotechnology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, microbiology, genetics, gene editing, chemistry, agricultural sciences and environmental technologies. He is regularly involved in patent landscape studies, IP due diligence and long-term portfolio strategy for research-driven companies. 

Alongside his client work, Sven regularly shares his expertise in trainings. He is valued for his analytical approach and ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear and practical patent strategies.
